Beluga Whale

Usually, when people think of whales, there are only a couple of popular specimens that come to mind such as the Blue Whale, or perhaps the Orca Whale. These amazing animals are only a few of the numerous whale species in the world, and there is one that is especially outstanding because of its unique appearance. We are talking about the Beluga or White whale, a fabulous animal that has become famous because of the Moby Dick story but that is yet unknown to many of us. Let us be more specific.

The Beluga Whale is part of marine mammal’s class and it is grouped inside the cetacean order. While cetaceans are divided into two major suborders according to the dental structure (Mysticeti for the ones that have baleen plates and Odontoceti for the toothed ones), the Beluga Whale is located in the second one but belonging to the Monodontidae family, which is only shared with the Narwhal whale.

The White Whale or Beluga Whale is currently a vulnerable species in terms of conservation status. Pollution, reduction of their natural habitat, fishery and some other causes are the main reason for the progressive loss of these animals. Beluga whales are usually rather small whales in comparison with the rest of the whales. They reach up to five meters long and therefore they are not gigantic, being this one of the reasons why they are so easily captured. This whale has several differences with the rest of the whales: in the first place, one of the most distinctive features is its skin color. This whale also lacks a dorsal fin and has no vertebral fusion in the neck, which means that the Beluga whale can turn its head to both laterals on the contrary of the rest of the whales. Beluga whales are distributed mainly in the Artic and Sub-Artic regions, in waters belonging to countries like Russia, Canada, United States, Finland, Sweden and Norway.

These animals are highly sociable and move in groups, constantly changing from one to another. The tenderest relationship is the one that develops between the mother and the calf, both of them meeting and recognizing each other even after years of maturity. There is no need to say that protecting and respecting the environment these animals live in is a big help to their conservation. They are extremely wonderful and sometimes they even get to be friendly with humans, so we can do nothing less than loving them and respecting them in their free and natural ambience.
